This weekend, March 1-2, 2014, Austin’s own Staple! Independent Media Expo celebrates its tenth annual event — and we’re giving our readers a chance to get in for free! (Details on how to enter the contest at the end of this post.)
Staple! is an annual convention for alternative comics, minicomics, webcomics, zines, underground comics, and graphic arts. Chris Nicholas (aka Uncle Staple) founded the conference in 2005 as a gathering place for professional artists and amateur creators, “a showcase for the folks who publish comics and zines and possible literary masterworks out of their own apartments.”
This year’s guests include Shannon Wheeler, Francesco Francavilla, and Chip Zdarsky. Of course, there will be oodles of other talented professional artists and writers, including our skilled and snarky friend, J Hause, who will be teaching a Digital Painting Tutorial. Hause is responsible for the beautiful digital portrait below of Uncle Staple and his Staplegator. (Visit the website for a full schedule of panels and special features.)
We are beyond stoked to be attending this year’s show as exhibitors for the very first time! Come say, “Hi!” and check out our rad merch at table 70B. Renée and I will be showing some cute, geeky new items that are sure to make you smile, including prints, jewelry, and gift items.
Also, be sure to get acquainted with our pals at OneOfUs.Net whether you can make it out to Staple or not. These guys are on a mission to unite the geeks of the world, breaking down the barriers perpetuated for so long by a world that traditionally has divided various fandom factions into separate websites and groups. The OneOfUs crew will be doing live recording, interviews, and fantastic giveaways this weekend that show attendees won’t want to miss!
